  • From Korth: "Bring some romance to your garden with Sunset Proposal. Heir to the Throne and its offspring, Blown Away, have been sold out every year. Combining the genetics of Heir to the Throne and Blown Away with the clear colored Shores of Time gave a great new introduction – Sunset Proposal. Like the two famous parents, Sunset Proposal features a blend of color on the petals, a large gold edge with small teeth, easy opening, and hardy dormant foliage. In the garden, Sunset Proposal is a standout with many days with multiple flowers open. The flowers are a brighter pink than either parent but are still a lovely blend of pink and orange. The flowers are fertile both ways and we are starting to see exciting seedlings from Sunset Proposal. Sunset Proposal was named for our son Andrew and his wife Michelle. They became engaged when Andrew surprised Michelle with a romantic proposal on the shores of Green Bay at sunset. We are sure Sunset Proposal will be loved wherever it goes." Pix from Korth. • From Korth: "In the lore of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, there were three elven rings of power. One was called Narya – the Ring of Fire. This ring was secretly given to Gandalf the Wizard for strength in his battle against Sauron. The flower named for Gandalf’s Ring reminded me of the Ring of Fire with its deep red petal color surrounded by the bright gold edge. While a red flower with a gold edge may not seem unique, several features of this flower make it special. First, the clear and typically unblemished petal color traced back to generations of our breeding for this trait. Second, this is a late season flower – also unique for us as we typically only breed with mid season flowers to make sure we get our seed pods ripe. The gold edge is huge thanks to Harold Steen breeding. Last, the scapes are special with high bud count and lateral branches that branch into a “y” themselves giving extra flowers on each branch. Our top scape had 44 buds in 2019. The flowers open mid-morning and last well all day. While it is fertile both ways, we do not breed with late flowers much so anyone interested in hybridizing with this flower will have unique genetics." Dormant. Up to 44 buds. Pix from Korth. Dormant. • From Korth: "Benjamin Andrew is one of the finest daylilies we have produced. The rich burgundy color and large gold edge make for a beautiful flower. Other great attributes include minimal blemishes, pod and pollen fertility, rebloom in our climate. The parents of Benjamin Andrew include our great purple breeder Lydia's Cloth which contributes clear color and a lack of blemishes. The big gold edge is likely due to our fabulous Harold Steen. We are finding Benjamin Andrew to be a fine parent, passing on the big gold edge and clear colors. It is easily fertile both ways! Benjamin Andrew was delayed for introduction as it is slow to increase but we think this trait is great for gardeners as this flower does not need to be divided as often. This unique flower is named for our grandson and is as special as he is. Very limited and will be much sought after." Pix from Korth. Dormant. 24 buds. • From Korth: "There are no perfect daylilies and each flower on each plant is unique.  While this is true, Foundation Jewel is so consistent that we could have photographed it almost every day.  The flowers open well in all kinds of weather including our cool and dry days that we often have during bloom season.  The flowers are typically blemish free (a trait we breed for).  The scapes present the flowers at a pleasing height.  It is pod and pollen fertile and is proving to be a great breeder.  The plant beneath the flower is excellent with good bud count and branching, hardy dormant foliage, and good growth rate.  Again, not a perfect daylily but Foundation Jewel does not have any obvious faults and we are sure it will be enjoyed at many gardens. The best feature of Foundation Jewel is the clear red color.  We described it as cherry red because it has no hint of orange in the color.  The watermark is lighter red (pink) and the edge is pure white.  While not always toothy in appearance, the edge typically has small white teeth.  This characteristic is passed on to the offspring and we have some excellent seedlings from Foundation Jewel that have larger and more numerous teeth along with the clear red color. In 2022, I took the first picture of Foundation Jewel on July 15 and the last picture on September 3 giving us a bloom season of over 7 weeks for this cultivar with rebloom adding to the bloom season.  In a more southerly location, we would expect similar performance. Foundation Jewel continues our naming tradition of using a “mineral/rock” type name for our breeding line that started with Upon This Rock (registered in 2004).  In Revelation 21:19 it states the “foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel”.  We think this plant is indeed a “jewel.”" Pix from Korth. • From Korth: "Medium purple with large green throat and lavender watermark, small lavender and gold edge King of Creation is the last of our introductions out of Tet. Rose F. Kennedy and the only one in the purple color range.  While the green throat is striking, the flowers also include a watermark of light rose, rose/purple petals, a white midrib, and an edge of gold and lavender. As a garden plant, the large flowers stand out and the 8” flowers make you stop and take notice.  The scapes are well budded for such a large flower.  We have observed rebloom on it this summer.  The flowers open well and are reasonably sunfast.  King of Creation is slow to multiply which is why we had to wait 8 years to introduce it.  While not great for selling, slow in the garden means it does not need to be divided often which is good. Going over our records, we see that King of Creation is both pod and pollen fertile.  We have not used King of Creation as much as we should have but have observed nice seedlings from it and have no doubt if used more, the result would be excellent." • From Korth: "What a joy Pinewood Tree of Life was in the garden in 2022.  We ended up taking 25 photographs of individual flowers that were near perfect for photos and could have taken more.  It seemed every day we had multiple flowers that were a marvel to look at.  Our garden name for it from several years ago was “the tree” for its massive scape but there is much more to this flower than a heavy scape. Daylily characteristics that we value are:
    • Dormant and hardy in our climate
    • Good scape height
    • Good branching and bud count (more than 4 laterals, 20 buds)
    • Large flower size
    • Heavy texture to stand up to rain and heat
    • Minimal blemishes on dark flowers
    • Good opener
    • Sturdy scapes that do not flop
    • Pod and pollen fertile
Pinewood Tree of Life rates at the top of the scale for all the above characteristics.  The only negative for us is the slow rate of increase as we have relatively few plants to sell. What is so great about a purple daylily with a gold edge?  The garden presence of Pinewood Tree of Life is difficult to show on a photo but the tall scapes displaying perfectly formed 7 inch dark burgundy flowers with a bubbly white/gold edge is fun to see.  Because the flowers hold up well to rain and heat, it is best to dead head them to have the next day’s flowers show well. As a breeder, we have some seedlings we are evaluating with Pinewood Tree of Life as a parent.  As a slow grower, we did not use it much for hybridizing until the last two years.  In 2021, we made over 130 seeds from it and should have a similar number this year.  We will have a lot of seedlings blooming from Pinewood Tree of Life in 2023 and 2024. In the spring of 2022, we lined out Pinewood Tree of Life in single fans.  The fans are now big with all of them having a fine scape but most have not multiplied.  We will be selling the plants next spring as they were lined out so some may be large single fans.  Because it is slow to multiply, we have less plants than typical for a premiere introduction but after 6 bloom seasons, we want to get this fine plant out for others to enjoy. The name corresponds to the biblical tree of life mentioned in Genesis chapter 2 (in the garden of Eden) and in Revelation chapter 22 (in the heavenly city)." Pix from Korth. Dormant. 32 buds.
