The pollen parent seedling combined many of our blue-eyed introductions with the result being Ransom from Heaven has more of a lavender/blue eye and edge when compared to Lord of Life. In the garden, Ransom from Heaven is an excellent performer. The flowers have pleasing color and contrast, good substance, and sturdy scapes. The large ruffles do not inhibit the flowers from opening – even in our cool summer weather. As a hybridizing plant, Ransom from Heaven is fertile both ways. From Korth: "Red Heifer is a deep red self with green throat. The color is unique and our garden visitors have commented on the fascinating color of Red Heifer. The dark red contains no orange or burgundy colors. In addition to the striking color, the flower size is 7 inches so the flowers are hard to miss. The flowers are typically without blemish and open easily so each one is enjoyable in the garden. The genetics of this flower are also fascinating. Martha Edson Norris is in the background of both parents. While the large size and flat form from Martha Edson Norris is evident in Red Heifer, the color is not evident from either parent. There must be some red in the background but Red Heifer takes that color to a new level. We have successfully used Red Heifer in hybridizing and good results are expected. The name comes from the parent – Cow of Bashan. We like to connect the names of the parent plant to the new introduction. A red heifer is also in the Bible in Numbers 19 where a red heifer without blemish was to be sacrificed for the purification from sin. From the hybridizer: "Redefinable is being sold as a hybridizer's daylily. Redefinable has been an excellent breeding daylily taking many variegated daylilies to the next level of fancy. I have many examples proving this to be true. As pictured, Redefinable does not carry the same variegation from bloom to bloom. Redefinable re-blooms up to 3 times. The first scape is short, blooms early, and the blooms aren't very fancy. The re-bloom scapes have been measured at 26 inches. As the daylily settles in during the season, the blooms become more fancy and heavy edged. Redefinable is an easy pod parent. Redefinable does not make huge fans. For folks that have grown Ragamuffin, I use that daylily as a guide as far a fan size comparison. Redefinable is being grown out for me in the South. If Rust is an issue for you, wait another year. Redefinable while evergreen, is a Northern Hardy Evergreen. I've grown Redefinable in zone 6 without snow cover multiple years. However I would recommend mulching it for the winter. Redemption Day has been a consistently fine garden plant with flowers that open well and have clean colors.
